The story behind the words for the week:
I wanted the children to increase their speaking and writing vocabulary, so I started the search for a curriculum that fit our needs. I found a few programs, but could not find exactly what I had in mind. Tom reminded me that we have the English from the Roots Up curriculum that we started many years ago and that Roots Up would be a good start. English from the Roots Up has 100 Greek and Latin Root words that can be learned by all ages. So, recently we started Roots Up again by reviewing the words daily. Each child makes their own 3x5 card with a Greek or Latin word and definition and stores them in their own personal 3x5 card box. The second part of this idea started about a year ago when I started a vocabulary notebook. As I read, I wrote down unfamiliar words and looked up their meanings. It occurred to me that these words would be a good start for vocabulary learning. So, between the Roots Up words and new words from my notebook I introduce each week, we have our own personalized curriculum!

Christmas Harping
Wednesday | December 31, 2008

A friend that works with Dad hired our harpists to play for his three-hour open house this weekend. We enjoyed the opportunity to share music and Jesus with the crowd; about 100 people attended.

KBR Ministries - expanded and revised to cover other aspects of ministry - is now online! Our mission is to encourage young ladies to grow in their walk with Jesus Christ. Other resources will be avaliable from KBR Ministries in the coming months.

We are also praising the Lord for blessing four years of publishing The King's Blooming Rose magazine. The winter 2009 issue is now complete and should be mailed soon.

Mom, proof-reading KBR. I am so thankful for the time she has taken to eliminate mistakes in this issue.

If one's not fast enough, just use two! Transferring files from our old laptop to the new one I received for my birthday

I was so excited to visit KBR's printer in Holton last week: we watched them print the newest issue. Here is KBR on the computer

Everything digital: here's the "digital press" that KBR is printed on each time. The addressing machine then sorts our address database by zip code, and prints the address on each copy.

We are extremely grateful for their generous donation to KBR of color cover and gloss paper!

A Letter Of Appreciation to Our President
Saturday | December 20, 2008

The Honorable George W. Bush
President of the United States
Washington, DC

Dear Mr. President:

I would like to thank you for your loyalty to our great nation. In the midst of such unbelievable opposition, you have stood firm on what you believe is the best for America. For the past eight years, you have been a strong leader when we have needed it most.

I appreciate your fear and respect for God; we need a leader who displays these great, and often rare, qualities. Your upright character and integrity shines like a bright light. This inspires me to choose right, no matter what others may think or say. You have set a great example for Americans to follow.

Every morning as you wake up, you face the list of causalities from the Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. You encounter difficulties at every side, but you press onward; you have made the choices you have believed are for our nation’s good, even if they are very unpopular and difficult. Thank you for your endurance in this war—not only a war against the nation’s physical enemies, but also a battle against those who oppose the godly principles on which you stand.

Thank you for serving our country. We are grateful for you today, and our future children will continue to be in the years to come; you may be the last President of the United States who displays such strong character and personal faith in Jesus Christ.
I sincerely thank you for what you have done, for us today, and for the future of our country.

Yours Very Sincerely,
Sarah L. Bryant

---------------
Question for thought: Do we pray for our leaders enough?
Whether we support each decision they make or not,
they need our prayers.
---------------
"Exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers,
intercessions, and giving of thanks,
be made for all men."
(I Timothy 2:1, KJV)

Cold Weather
Wednesday | December 17, 2008

Sunday morning when Nathan finished his chores, he said he could feel the temperature change. It was 58 degrees with 20 mph winds, and within 15 minutes the temperature had dropped 24 degrees - it was 34 degees and still falling! By dusk, it was 7 degrees (Canadians, that's about -15 degrees Celcius)! It was truly amazing to feel the temperature drop so drastically.

Of True Value...
Saturday | December 13, 2008

Samuel, drawing roads

If you are blessed to be a big sister, I'm sure you've experienced the joys of interacting with your siblings.

As my family will attest, when I was younger, I was much more active outdoors. I have fond memories when Nathan and I would ride for hours in circles on our driveway - an area which is about 20' by 30'. On summer days when we had afternoons free, we would draw out "roads" on the driveway in chalk - complete with stop signs, red lights, and gas stations.

It has been a while since I have gone out to play with my siblings. Recently, Samuel begged me to come out and ride bikes with him. At first, I brushed him off. "I need to work on that project.....I need to practice music....I have clothes to fold....I want to write that letter..." I had plenty of excuses. Of course, he did not listen to any of them. Wise as he is, his solution was, "Do it later!" With persistence on his part, I conceded to play with him, and showing him how to make "roads."

It was well worth it. My siblings loved having me join them and showing them some things we did in those "olden days."

Samuel was right - those things I thought I "needed" to do could be done later. Temporal things can wait. Eternal investments cannot. They are immediate: they have to be done now, or the opportunity will be lost. And truly, things eternal are what truly matters. Spending time with my siblings and investing in them is much more profitable than most other things I can do.

Enjoy the time you can spend with your siblings. Enjoy their sweet smiles, their cute sayings, and the opportunity you have to play with them. They will grow up; use each day to bless them and invest in their lives. Give them memories of you that will warm their heart in the future.

Be sure to sign up for our giveaway - it ends Monday!

Tea Concoctions
Wednesday | December 3, 2008

Today I made tea bags for Tom to take to work. The base is a good quality green tea, and then I added ginseng, ginkgo, bilberry, dandelion, raspberry, shavegrass and saw palmeto. Any variety of herbs can be used, depending on what health area you desire to target. I mixed the herbs together and then stuffed the tea bags and ironed them closed. Pour hot water over the tea bag and steep.

Today I made a tummy tea for babies. The ingredients were catnip, raspberry, peppermint, fennel seed and I also added echinacea and Pau d'Arco to aid a thrust/yeast problem. I mixed the herbs together and made a tea of it. A dropper can be used to administer it to the babe as needed. Also, soak a cloth in the warm tea to wipe the babe's behind for added relief and healing. Any mixture of herbs can be used depending on target area.
