Trip 2009: Traveling Activities Friday | February 27, 2009
Jonathan: counted semi trucks and sang. Although we do not usually use headphones, an exception was made because of the length of time spent in the van.
Rachael and Samuel: camera duals
Sarah: taking more pictures
Nathan and Jonathan: darkness does not deter them--they are always ready with their flashlights!
Samuel: listened to the story of Beethoven, and of course, played with many legos
Traveling In KS, OK, NM, TX
We took US Highways instead of Interstate Highways in order to learn more about the lay of the land and the towns through which we were traveling. It was so educational traveling through these places.
Entering Oklahoma
This is where your beef comes from: the feed lot. The black specks in the background are cows. In one feed lot, We estimated 480 acres of cows, standing shoulder to shoulder. If seeing cows in cramped, nasty conditions like these will not make you eat local beef, nothing will! At Bryant Family Farm, our cattle have fresh green grass and room to graze!
Entering New Mexico and Mountain Time Zone
The scenery was quite different: flat, but pretty
Wind "farm"
Entering Texas
A huge, beautiful blue sky
The dirt was fascinating: red!

Trip 2009: Preperations Wednesday | February 25, 2009
Food Preperations
We take a winter reprieve since the goats kid in March, and are dried up in January and February. We enjoy this time of year for traveling and there are certainly no crowds! We recently made a ten-day, five-state trip. Our first stop was Fort Bliss, Texas, to visit Brandon. After spending a few days with him, we headed to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. This 3000+ mile trip was quite the adventure, and required much preparation. This was our first trip west of our home, and proved to be very interesting and educational.
Stocking up on animal feed
Crates containing our food and snacks
Faithfully loading the van; yes, we took too much stuff!

Praise Ye the Lord! Tuesday | February 10, 2009
The weather has been beautiful lately -- perfect for having devotions outdoors. I enjoyed the sunlight and mild weather today while having my quiet times. As it seems harder to find a quiet spot in the house, outdoors is often a nice place to search God's word in solitude. Time spent in God's word, out of the bustle of everyday life, is always worth the time, and refreshing to the soul. Studying the Bible with siblings is also very strengthening. Furry yellow kitty decided to join me...
Indoors, Sneaker also enjoys basking in the sun... and helping with math problems.
"Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD." (Psa 150:6 )

Picking Up Cows Saturday | February 7, 2009
Today we picked up our two Murray Grey cows from the breeder. It was a nice two-hour ride there. Here are two cute calves at their farm
The guys...
Playing with their pony
What's back there?
Bringing S2, our Murray Grey cow, home
On the way home there was a funeral for an American soldier killed in Iraq. Beautiful flags lined the highway
As well as protestors...and supporters...
And a peaceful, pretty hay field.

Nuts Around Here Friday | February 6, 2009
Today we received 22 pounds of fresh pecans from Marmee Dear. We love pecans. They are supposedly healthier soaked in water, adding 2 TBSP salt per pound of pecans. Soak overnight, then dehydrate or dry in 150 degree oven until dry. These make yummy snacks. My grandmother had pecan trees and they are so delicious fresh-the taste does not compare to the ones you buy in the stores! These pecans were grown not too far from where my grandother lived
Trivia question: How do you know "mousse" is said like "moose," not "mouse"? Or how about "moo-sé"?

Around the Farm Monday | February 2, 2009
Chicken chores
Saturday we bought much-needed hay from a friend
Spring steaks!
The pigs are growing well. One is growing alot more than the other two. Jonathan's pig is, well,
the PIG of the bunch; he is much bigger than the others. Our "family" pig is the runt, but only because THE pig roots, shoves, and pushes ours away from the food. Nathan and Jonathan's pigs will be butchered in March and we will wait until the end of April to butcher ours. Maybe he can grow more when the other bully pigs are on someone's table for breakfast!
Gun-cleaning class
