05.27.08 | Memorial Day
For Memorial Day, we did something a little different this year. Dad decided to just enjoy the day together and have a cookout in the afternoon (with homemade ice cream), and wash and wax our vehicles. That turned out interesting, as the day started off cloudy and rainy. We washed the inside of the cars and the exterior before lunch, and by early afternoon, it had cleared up so we could wax. I worked on the van. I've never waxed before, but it wasn't hard and I enjoyed doing it...I did realized, though, about half-way through, how long the van is! I was pretty tired by the time I reached the end again. We had a nice meal together that afternoon...
Mom's garden is looking very nice, since today she got caught up with the weeding and planting. She has onions, potatoes, lettuce, peas, watermelon, cucumbers, and much more already growing!

05.24.08 | Fencing
Today we went out to our property to put up some fence for our four new cows. It has been raining a lot lately, and we were concerned that the pond dam would completely wash out. When we got there, we found that it had washed out. Today, we also met the fourth propsective excavator at our property and he said it wouldn't be a big deal to fix, and he could maybe get to it in the next few weeks. We're praying he works out.

Talking to Travis about the dam

Samuel and Mom laid out the string (plumb-line) for the new fence posts.

We took our small garden tractor so we could clear the path for the new electric fence. When we got there it was cloudy and threatened to pour down rain any moment. After we talked to two neighbors who stopped to see what we were doing, walking to the spot on the property, and unloading our fencing supplies, it started to rain. Thankfully, it stopped a few minutes later, and by early afternoon the sun was out and sky cleared. We got all the fence line cleared and the posts aligned and put up. But we didn't have time to finish putting up the wire. That should be fairly easy to do, so hopefully we'll get to that next week. We had a great time working together putting the fence up!
By the way, can you believe that my younger siblings have four swings in ONE tree? And they all swing at the same time! It's so funny!

05.17.08 | A New Trailer!
After several years of looking, we finally bought a long-needed stock trailer! We're going to need it to pick up the new dairy cow and four new steers.

The children loved climbing in, on, and through our new trailer!

05.11.08 | Planting Our Orchard
We bought 12 fruit trees to plant on the property. We want to get them planted since it will be several years before they produce.
We eat enough apples to need about 30 acres of orchard. But, we settled for just 12 trees for starters. What a job to get them in the ground! Nathan and Sarah planted the trees, and Jonathan helped put up the fences around each tree.

We had fun planting them!

A lunch break

...the beautiful finished product!
