New to the Bryant Family Blog? Don't worry. We are too! We are in the process of building our family business website, so please bear with us as we get our pages written!

We are a Christian homeschooling family striving to serve the Lord and reside on an acreage in rural Kansas. We have a small family business and sell all-natural chicken and turkey, grass-finished beef, fresh eggs, and goat milk. This is the journal of our farm life, adventures, and learning experiences. We're glad you've stopped by, and hope you'll visit again! Let us know what you think.

09.23.08 | Pre-Birthday Surprise

My brothers Nathan and Jonathan have a birthday coming up this week. (Jonathan was born on Nathan's 2nd birthday.) The celebration has already begun: today at the Conservatory, our friend Betty invited us to lunch and dessert for the boys' birthdays.

...Dad showed up for the party...

Enjoying lunch together

Betty had a surprise ice cream cake for the boys!

"Yumm...looks good!"

After the meal Rachael played harp for the residents

And Sarah played a bit of piano

After that, we dropped by some friends'. The boys enjoyed playing on their zip-track.

09.19.08 | Working together

Samuel remarked, while helping with waxing the van, that it looked like the van grew curly gray fur!

As we waxed the van, we listened to the
Serven Clan's four-part harmony CD, Songs of the Remnant. This my favorite of their CDs...and a great way to dwell on Scripture while working, at the same time learning to sing harmony.

Our neighbor hired us to clean out her rather large chicken pen. So, on Wednesday afternoon, we all pitched in to tackle the job. Everyone had an assigned task and worked diligently to complete their task. In order to start this job, the children had to complete their daily school assigments - and it was amazing at how quickly they finished their schoolwork. Quite an accomplishemnt for these slow first days of school!

The boys took our tractor to haul off the shavings.

The boys wear bandanas to keep out the fumes and dust.

Samuel wore two bandanas on his head! Quite a sight...

Rachael and Mom cleaned around the pen.

09.14.08 | Lunchtime Entertainment

Mom is famous around here for her delicious men's health concoction, a tincture of herbs, weeds, and bark, called "Manly Juice." Whenever the guys hear the word mentioned, all you can see is a puff of smoke as they hit the trail. Personally, I love seeing them drink this stuff. It has guarenteed instant results! Dad says one batch Mom made was so strong that it would have eaten the paint off the highway. Ladies, if you truly care about the health of your men, you must buy some of this from my mom's herb store, Every Herb of the Field. (for more info, email dlsbryant@hotmail.com) Today, we got the jar out once more. It was a sure test of my cute brothers' manliness and courage. They all passed. Here are some pictures. And, as a warning, we offer this to all guests, so beware!

Get ready...the guys line up with their cups; Dad serves them. get set...go!!

Whew! Look at his distressed face...he's trying to gulp it down manly here. "Water, PLEASE!" We've never seen him hit the water spout so fast!

He says, "Ya ready?!" Then, "Yuck! It burns!!" He also grabbed his water cup in an unusual hurry.

Nathan kept his reaction to himself, so I didn't capture his face... Great job, guys! I'm proud of you - you're tough. Now, you need to get me to taste it!

Samuel lost another tooth.

Dad helping Nathan with geography. This school year brings new challenges as all the children have more subjects to learn.

09.10.08 | #62 - it's what's for dinner...

#62 is going to the butcher tonight (he's the black cow in the header above); tomorrow he will be defined in hanging weight. In a couple of weeks we will watch #62 cut into steaks and roasts for our and our customers' tables. It has been several months since we've had any beef and we are all looking forward to grass finished steak and hamburgers!

The boys saying "Farewell, big boy!" See you on the table soon!

Speaking of cows, S2, the first of our Murray Grey herd, and "puppy" (we're really original - that's his name) are doing well; he will be "what's for dinner" one day also...

09.05.08 | Baking Bread

Today, Mom made 14 loaves of whole wheat bread, sold 8 of them, made eleven jars of blackberry jam, and made three pounds of feta cheese!

We freeze the bread and to keep it fresh, we suck the air out of the bag with a straw; a technique we learned last fall packaging raw fresh chickens. Bread is much more appetizing!

09.04.08 | No News

At our new property, once the well was dug, we were ready to move forward with plans to build a house/barn on our property. Finally, after a year of getting only the dam work and the well dug, we could build! We were thrilled. Since then, Tom has given a no "go-ahead" for the work to be done. The financial numbers are extremely high for the building we want to build. We are praying concerning what the Lord would have us do, and are open to options. Tom has looked into every option he can think of - moving an existing house, a modular home, living in a camper or tent, living in a metal barn - yet the Lord has given no direction. We know things will work out one of these days. Praise God for His Providence. Please keep us in your prayers!
